Okay this thread is reserved for you guys to ask whatever you want about your guitar gear or gear you dont
have yet. Even basic electronics (I get stumped pretty quick on the electronics so we can learn together on that one)

I wlll try my best to give you a straight answer and if I dont know how to answer it straight away, I
will find an answer for you. This is meant to help you feel free to ask anything and if anybody tries to respond
with critical or condescending remarks, they'll be tossed out of this thread.

I absolutely love to talk about guitar pedals/effects and have spent a lifetime collecting, gigging with, repairing, destroying, pondering, experimenting and recording with waaay to many stompboxes.

Ask me, I will do my best to help you, any question is a good question, there are no dumb questions. bounce

Pedal answers for Dummies w/ no judgement or ridicule :^) Empty Opinion

Post  mshehan Wed May 16, 2012 11:51 am

I have a fun one for you then! First - the obvious. I'm planning on picking up an Atomic Brain in the near future (as soon as I can afford it). I have the Old School "Brain Seltzer" which I will still use of course, but I feel I have a need for a Brain. But this is the question:

Once I put the Brain in the chain...I will have a Boss Tu-2, Nocturne Brain, Fuzz Ray, 1982 TS-9, Boss BD-2, Boss DM-3, and Ibanez CS-9 (1982-83ish). I have 1 spot left...ODs, Fuzz, Delay, and Chorus seem to be covered to make me happy. So what would be one really cool and different pedal to fit in that spot. I'm not really a "wah" guy, I had a Smart Gate, but these pedals aren't loud, and I think it choked out the sound more than it helped.

Anyone have any cool and fun suggestions?!

there are a quadzillion effects out there, you'd need to define what you play or like to play or who or what inspires your
sound, etc..

I'm wondering why you dont own a tremelo or vibrato

Pedal answers for Dummies w/ no judgement or ridicule :^) Empty Very true

Post  mshehan Wed May 16, 2012 11:58 pm

Good point - I was kinda kinda vague...but I think it's because maybe I have no clue what I want (I won't say need - haha). I have a reverb (a BYOC) that I use when I play my Bassman. I had a Fulltone SupraTrem, but sold it due to a lack of use... Because my mid 70s Deluxe Reverb has a really nice Tremolo, and I also have a Gibson GA-42RVT with a good tremolo (reverb stinks - hence the BYOC). I just did a "restoration" of my '68 Bassman, so it will become my most frequently used amp now.

I don't gig anymore, but am working on setting up a spare bedroom as a recording room.

I've given up trying to emulate heroes sounds...they all blow me out of the water a million times over. Setzer, Scotty Moore, Hank Garland, Jerry Reed, Brent Mason, Brad Paisley, Waylon, George Harrison, Keith Richards....too many more to list I really love many types of music, and just like hearing guys who can really play. I love my Gretsches, I'm a Tele junkie - and recently picked up a 1976 Les Paul Pro Deluxe with P90s that I've become a huge fan of...P90s are SO cool.

As I sit here and ramble on late at night I'm starting to make less sense tahn usual....BUT..........I think I should just get an Atomic Brain and forget it!!

I've spent the last couple hours of work watching Strymon videos on youtube (I thought Friday was the non-productive day). I figure if it sounds good through crappy work computer speakers it would be insane in person....that might be the pedal I need to fill the last space.

Pedal answers for Dummies w/ no judgement or ridicule :^) Empty Flint

Post  mshehan Fri May 18, 2012 8:58 am

Flint looks awesome!! The "shimmer" setting on the Blue Sky sounds pretty cool too, but the trem/reverb combo of the Flint might be ideal. Especially since I have my Bassman restored and it's going to become my main amp. The Flint would make my BYOC look like a beginner's toy.

Flint and Lex are on my list.....right after the Atomic Brain of course....hope I can swing one a month for new next few months. Keep it on the down low - haha

Pedal answers for Dummies w/ no judgement or ridicule :^) Empty Stupid question regarding power

Post  Tonedeaf Sun Aug 12, 2012 5:49 pm

When off some of my pedals allow the signal to pass through to my amp whether they have power to them or not. Others don't. I only have so many adapters/power supplies so I am frequently switching them around and it bugs me when i have to take something completely out of the chain temporarily just because I am no powering it. Why do some need power and others don't just to pass the signal along?

pedals that are true bypass actually bypass the entire circuit board and thus the input jack and output jack are connected via a hard wire switch (ie 3pdt if it has an LED, or Dpdt without an LED). In these pedals you will here
your dry original signal unaffected, whether the pedal is powered on or not in bypass mode.

Pedal answers for Dummies w/ no judgement or ridicule :^) Empty RE-301 emulation...

Post  KnottyPine Wed Nov 13, 2013 1:33 pm

Tavo,

I am fortunate to own a 301 and I love its sound so much but i don't want to gig with it so I have been building a "modular rig" (guitar pedals) that emulates "that" particular sound, however it's missing that "punch" that a RE-301 input adds to the sound. Which led me to your Nocturne Dyno Brain preamp pedal.

When I play my RE-301 I use Input 3, Volume set to noon, Input Level switch set to -35db, Output Level switch set to -15db and I get THAT sound = Fat, Clean and with a slight compression to it.

If only I could emulate that with a pedal...

So my question to you is...will the Dyno Brain get "that" sound?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to your reply.

-Mark

*Note: I use a moog chorus into a moog delay and the guitars I use are solid-bodies played through a 1x15 music man amp*

Hi Mark,
The Dynobrain and Atomic brain are basically the same type of analog preamp that sits in the RE301, not an emulation of it.. just manipulated to work best for the guitar and with premium components to lower the
hiss and hum that we have in our old space echos as well match impedances better, especially
since an RE-301 was designed pretty much as a line level effects processor for a keyboard and
insertion into a PA system.
The Brain preamps maximize it for guitar and amplifer with significantly better impedance matching, american made metal film resistors, switchcraft jacks, silver mica and metal film caps, etc.
No need to lug the big machine around anymore. Smile
peace,
tavo

Post  UsedDroids Fri Jun 13, 2014 3:01 pm

Hi so I'm very new to this magic call rockabilly guitar I've been trying to get a decent sound from my amp a Vox ac15 valve reactor hybrid I couldn't afford the full tube version on my budget. Now I love the sounds I can get from it some nice clean chimey sounds but I'm struggling to get the dirt I'm looking for I get some ok overdrive but just doesn't quite satisfy my appetite so finally to the question how would your pedals ( specifically the billy brain and ubangi stomp) work through a hybrid amp of this type and any tips for a newbie?
