6120 tm VS Country Club

Post  DrZulak on Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:01 pm

Hey,
I am no doubt a Gretsch guy. I have two of them. a 2004 Country Club (Terada) and a 2007 6120 tm (Terada) matched with a Mesa Lonestar 50/100watt 1x12.
The Country Club is amazing it always sounds great. But the 6120 is muddy. I love it, but sometimes I feel I have to fight for good tone. I bought the 6120 as a backup so that i am not "putting the miles on" the Country Club.
Now I get the whole fingers=tone thing but still...I bought an MXR 10-band eq pedal and that helped a lot. but I feel that i am still not getting that awesome rockabilly tone.
I am thinking about switching out the pickups but.... I don't know.
Do a lot of people switch out of the stock filter-trons for TV jones?
Should i sell the 6120? (I really don't want to) and get a Hot Rod?
Any suggestions???

Pickups

I have owned a 6120, Country Club, and a Hot Rod with TV Jones Classics. The only one I still have is the Hot Rod. One of my favorites for sure. I don't detect and "muddiness" in it whatsoever. I don't see myself selling it at any time. I do plan to replace my 6120 - and when I do it will be equipped with TV Jones as well.

I also liked the sound of my CC, but for some reason the 24.6 scale of the Hot Rod and 6120 is just more "me" I guess. 25.5 on a Tele feels natural, but man I struggled to get used to the CC and eventually gave up. It did sound nice though. I know many fear the "no tone control" of the Hot Rod...but I really like it!

Just my take on the subject!

the pickups or filtertrons must be 3/16" from the top of the pkup covers to the bottom of both low and high E strings. This will require you to remove the wood shims beneath the pkups and replace them with rubber shims.. the guitar will come to life I guarantee it.

Hmm...rubber shims...?

I had my TV Jones Classics installed in my '03 Hot Rod several years ago...before I was brave enough to do my own guitar surgery. I'm going to bet that the tech at the shop didn't switch to rubber shims. I need to measure the string to pickup gap. If it's not 3/16" it looks like an easy mod. The guitar already sounds pretty amazing...are you saying it could sound better? Shocked
