The Commodores' "Easy" fuzz tone

Alright, I think the Commodores' tune, Easy (Like Sunday Morning), may have the coolest fuzz solo ever. Anyone know what they heck they were using in the studio? It almost sounds like it was recorded direct to the board with a fuzz and some compression.

Not sure what they used to get that tone...and there looks to be all sorts of debate on the web. But everything I see calls it a "guilty pleasure" song...consider me guilty! haha! I have always liked that song!!
